Mubadala and affiliates showcased together at IDEX.

Mubadala recently participated in the International Defence and Exhibition Conference (IDEX) at ADNEC. IDEX presented an opportunity for Mubadala and nine of our affiliates to showcase our role in supporting the UAE and regional armed forces.

The exhibiting affiliates included ADAT, ADSB, ADSI, Al Taif, Horizon, Injazat Defence, Tabreed, Waha Capital and Yahsat. Mubadala is bringing together these affiliates to build a sustainable and commercially viable support system for the UAE and regional armed forces inline with global military trends. The affiliates’ military support services showcased on the Mubadala stand ranged from research and development, maintenance, repair and overhaul, training and development, network systems, technology integration, technical solutions provision, utility support, through to the building of naval ships.

The stand hosted several media announcements including a Mubadala signing ceremony with Sikorsky Aerospace to establish a military maintenance, repair and overhaul centre in Abu Dhabi.

IDEX provided Mubadala and our affiliates with an excellent networking platform and we are looking forward to the next exhibition in 2011.

The first Mubadala Desert Safari was enjoyed by over 600 Mubadala employees, families and friends on March 20th in the desert dunes of Sweihan. It was loads of fun and provided many opportunities for everyone to get to know each other better and build new friendships between families.

The kids played with Mickey and Minnie Mouse, danced, flew kites, rode ponies, painted their faces and ate from their own custom-made buffet. The adults dune bashed, watched the falcon show, tried henna and shisha and ate from an 8-course buffet featuring local dishes.

All were enthralled by regional folklore dances and music with fireworks that lit up the starry desert night.

“My family and I had a wonderful time. It was an amazing experience!” said Romi Moore, of MREH.

“Since I arrived to Abu Dhabi last August, I’ve been dying to go to a desert safari and I couldn’t have wished for a better organized or fabulous experience!” said Hanaa Matar, Healthcare. “It was very well organized, a great family day and a great opportunity to socialize with staff from other departments.”

Visit the MSC home page for more photos and information on future events.

Getting to know your colleagues

Mubadala connects all of us in a very tangible way. Most of us spend so much time at work that we’ve naturally developed relationships with people in our unit. But many employees want to get to know people outside their unit. At a company with 500 employees, how do you go about this?

1) Attend activities

Employees have many opportunities to get to know their colleagues at company sponsored events such as the Employee Forums, the Desert Safari, the tennis tournament, and the live screenings of Formula 1 races.

How do you make the most of these opportunities and start a conversation with people you don’t know? Ask for introductions. Attend with a friend and agree to introduce each other to one person you don’t already know.

2) Practice the art of small talk

Look for easy conversation starters, such as a question. If you’ve just attended an Employee Forum, start with “What did you think of the Forum? Were you surprised by anything they said?”

If you’re watching a Grand Prix, start with “Do you know who is in the lead?” or “I’ve heard Singapore (or wherever the race is held) is a great place to visit. Have you been there?”

Most people feel awkward initiating small talk, so the other person will probably be grateful to you for getting the conversation started.

3) Smile

We’re not all natural conversationalists, but smiling is easy. Smile at the person and see what happens. Either they’ll smile back, easing your way into a conversation, or they’ll just wonder what you’re up to – but at least they’ll remember you!
